Chapter 8 How to satisfy the performance requirements

The performance requirements are the minimum level of performance that that buildings and building elements must meet.

The BCA has a dual approach to meeting the performance requirements. It provides a strong degree of certainty, combined with a high degree of flexibility, so that:

  • if compliance is achieved with deemed-to-satisfy provisions (being a set solution of what, when and how to perform something as prescribed by the BCA), a building proposal is deemed to have complied with the BCA (deemed-to-satisfy solution); and
  • if a building proponent wants to take an alternative approach, they have the opportunity to do so – on the understanding that their proposal must achieve the performance requirements of the BCA through using one or more of the prescribed assessment methods (this is the performance solution).
